VISITS TO BERLIN AND POTSDAM 2018

Two of our project-partners in Latinamerica have european roots and they regularly visit their relatives. It`s Sister Maria Teresa visiting her familiy who lives in the vicinity of Barcelona every two years; there she and me (Irmingard Weise) have already met twice.

And then there is Alex Bustamante, president of the CAICC in Bolivia since 2 years. His mother is living in England and he visits her in summertime.
So I I got the idea, that Maria Teresa and Alex B. could visit us in Berlin /Potsdam via a little flight hop, financed by RUVD. Because speaking to each other personally, spending some time together, showing our partners how we live etc would be a great help for further productive cooperation.

So it came, that Maria Teresa spent 24hours in Berlin and Potsdam in March 2018, and Alex B. was here in July of this year, spending about 26 hours.

Visit`s report of Maria Teresa
She brought with her a presentation-stick about the work of the sisters of her order. There one can see, for example, the boarding school in Chichicastenango /Guatemala, where Maria Teresa now is in the position of an administrative director. It is situated on a height of 2.400 m, the nights are cold, the days are hot. In the boarding school there are living 65 girls; they are very occupied with learning, even from 19-21:00 in the evening.
Scholarship-students, elected by Maria Teresa, can live there for free, they are helping Maria Teresa a bit by looking after younger pupils.

We now, in 2018, are granting 13 bursaries; it is two for auxiliary nurse, 3 for professional nurse, 6 for nursery school teacher and 2 for high school diploma. All that takes place on 3 different locations. Maria Teresa administers the money in a exemplary and reliable way, she is supported by the other sisters of her order in looking after the scholarship students. The bursary program is working out very fine, we practically have no losses, the young women are highly motivated and they work very hard; after having finished the training they all found jobs.

Visit`s report of Alex Bustamante
Since his assumption of office two years ago the CAICC experienced a time of great difficulties and turbulences . Besides RUVD there were no other foreign donators left, salaries could only paid irregularly, food suppliers did not get their money, director Veronica Bustillos carried on from crisis to crisis in a fire-distinguishing mode. When Alex B. tried to implement more structure in the CAICC, Veronica got the feeling of too much strain on her person and therefore she handed in her notice on 1.11.2017. After that she claimed to get 30.000.- USD from the CAICC based on her pension entitlements.

Fortunately this claim could be lowered down to 8.000.- USD and she already got this money. Furthermore the previous governmental and communal payments could be secured for the future, they cover up to 65 % of the CAICC`s budget.
Besides, Alex B. told us about several initiatives, which suppert the CAICC, some in Cochabamba, some in the USA.
Thus there will be a future for this important project, with reduced number of employees and persons who look after the children, whose parents live in prison while they themselves are staying outside (in accordance with a new bolivian law), either with their not-imprisoned mothers or with relatives.
For us it was a great pleasure to get to know Alex Bustamante, we now can share his optimism and we will support the CAICC also in the future.
